The Honest Company IPO in May 2021 was the payoff moment for a celebrity-founded brand that had spent a decade raising private money. Shares priced at $16 and finished their first Nasdaq session at $23, and the company was then valued at $1.89 billion, according to Bloomberg figures cited by Crunchbase News. What happened next is the more useful lesson for founders: the stock gave back far more than its debut gain, and the business later cut whole lines and channels on its way to reporting a profit.
Honest Company timeline: seed round to stock market
Honest took about a decade to go from seed funding to a public listing. Sources differ on the founding year: Crunchbase News and dot.LA say 2011, when the seed round closed, while the company’s own press releases say it was founded in 2012, the year Us Weekly gives for the launch.
| Year | Milestone (as reported) |
|---|---|
| 2011 | $6 million seed led by Lightspeed |
| 2014 | $70 million raise; valued near $1 billion |
| 2015 | $100 million round; valued at $1.7 billion |
| 2017 | $75 million Series E led by Fidelity |
| 2018 | $200 million from L Catterton |
| 2021 | Nasdaq IPO at $16 a share |
| 2024 | Alba steps down as chief creative officer |
In total, Crunchbase counted $503 million in known venture-backed funding before the listing. The 2015 valuation of $1.7 billion was reported by Refinery29, citing The Wall Street Journal.
How the Honest Company makes money
Honest sells diapers, wipes, skin care, beauty and household products to families. Its pitch is ingredient standards: the company’s story page says it screens out more than 3,500 chemicals from its cosmetics and toiletries.
The channel mix has shifted. PYMNTS noted in 2024 that Honest sold subscriptions on its website while building a stronger brick-and-mortar presence. By 2026 it had stopped using Honest.com as a fulfillment center altogether, as described below.
The IPO in numbers
The offering was as much an exit for early investors as a capital raise for the company. Crunchbase reported that of the 25.8 million shares sold for $412.8 million, the company itself offered about 6.45 million; the remainder came from backers including L Catterton, IVP, Lightspeed and General Catalyst.
- Price: $16 per share; first-day close of $23, a gain of 43.75%.
- Value: $1.89 billion at the close, per Bloomberg.
- Financials in the filing: sales of $235.5 million in 2019 rising to $300.5 million in 2020; a net loss of $14.4 million in 2020, narrowed from $31.1 million.
- Bigger holders: dot.LA reported that L Catterton co-CEO Scott Dahnke held nearly 16 million shares, far more than Alba.
A valuation is simply the share price multiplied by all shares outstanding on a given day. It is not cash in anyone’s pocket, and for Honest it proved short-lived.
What went wrong after the debut
Within a year, the share price had fallen sharply. Us Weekly, citing The Hollywood Reporter, said the stock traded at $4.52 by April 2022, against $23 on IPO day. The reports we reviewed did not pin that fall on one cause.
Honest had also faced product and legal challenges in its private years, all reported as allegations and all disputed by the company. According to Us Weekly:
- In August 2015, consumers posted photos of sunburns they said came from its zinc sunscreen; the company responded that it stood behind “the safety and efficacy of this product.”
- An organic-labeling complaint filed by the Organic Consumers Association was dismissed by a judge in December 2016.
- Honest settled two other labeling lawsuits in June 2017, as Reuters reported then, while denying the claims in both.
The founder steps back, the company resets
Alba left the chief creative officer job in April 2024 and kept a board seat, PYMNTS reported. Management has since run a restructuring it calls Powering Honest Growth, which included exiting several revenue streams.
The company’s August 2026 earnings release lists what it exited, using 2025 revenue: its apparel line ($38.5 million), Honest.com as a fulfillment center ($35.3 million) and sales to Canadian retailers ($3.4 million). As a result, reported second-quarter 2026 revenue fell 10.9% to $83.3 million, while organic revenue grew 6.7%.
Profit improved. Net income rose by $6.8 million to $10.7 million, which Honest attributed mainly to tariff refunds and organic growth, and it held $105.9 million in cash with no debt as of June 30, 2026. It also raised its full-year revenue outlook to $319 million to $325 million, from $306 million to $312 million.
Lessons from the Honest Company IPO for founders
- A hot debut is not the finish line. The first-day pop measured demand for a limited number of shares on one day; the April 2022 price measured what public investors thought of the business a year later.
- Know who is selling. Most IPO shares came from existing investors. Founders should read the offering terms to see how much money actually reaches the company.
- Celebrity attention cuts both ways. It helped Honest build awareness, and it also put product complaints in national headlines.
- Shrinking can be strategy. Honest’s 2026 results show lower revenue but higher profit after it exited several channels.
Other celebrity-backed brands took different exits: compare our stories on the Mint Mobile sale to T-Mobile and the Casamigos deal with Diageo, where founders sold to a strategic buyer instead of listing.
